I get asked this question time and time again. At exhibitions, in the studio, or when someone spots a mandala in the shop: “What effect is this picture meant to have?”

I am certainly able to answer that. Each of my independent works is created in an atmosphere of joy, love and compassion. That is the fundamental attitude I infuse into the mandala whilst painting.

Well, but that’s not the whole story.

Energy begins when painting

A mandala doesn’t just come about by chance. I spend many hours on a piece, placing dot after dot and letting it grow intuitively from the centre outwards. Even at the start, I don’t yet know what the finished picture will look like.

My inner state is also a factor here. I consciously focus my attention on what I wish to imbue the work with. Joy can be bright and lively, or completely still. For me, love means being attentive. Compassion supports without demanding anything in return.

For me, something of that remains. I am convinced that a work of art carries with it the energy in which it was created.

This idea is not new. Wassily Kandinsky explored the ‘spiritual in art’ in depth, along with the question of how colour and form can express an inner reality. For him, the inner world formed the very heart of artistic creation, as can be read in the digitised original edition from the University of Heidelberg.

In my mandalas, this becomes something unique. Colour, symmetry and the radiant centre give them their visible form. For me, the energy in which they are created is just as much a part of the work.

Colour never acts alone. I have already described how differently we perceive individual shades in the article ‘What really determines the effect of colours’. For me, however, the energy of a mandala cannot be reduced to a colour palette.

What resonates with you

Then the mandala leaves my studio. It finds its way into a living room, a medical practice or an office, where it encounters people whose stories I do not know.

There are certain reactions I hear time and time again. “What energy!” people say when looking at my pictures. Others find them meditative or say they can lose themselves in them. The gaze lingers on the centre. For a moment, everything else fades into the background.

But not everyone sees the same thing in it. A work of art may, for one person, evoke a sense of tranquillity above all else, whilst another may perceive strength or confidence in it.

To me, that's not a contradiction. The energy with which I paint is clear. How it comes across to a person is a personal matter.

I can tell what I put into it. Only you can say which parts of it resonate with you.

Compassion needs no explanation

Let’s take compassion as an example. A mandala created with this energy would, in my view, be well suited to a place where people need care and support.

A hospital ward would be one such place. The artwork does not fulfil any medical function there, nor does it promise a cure. It brings a sense of warmth and care into the room. Perhaps it will become a quiet haven for someone when so many other things are proving difficult.

This kind of effect is subtle. It does not need to be identified straight away to be there.

Commissions allow us to create something together

With custom mandalas, things work differently. Here, the person I’m painting for helps to determine the intention behind the work.

Some wishes are very clear. The mandala is meant to give courage, radiate strength or serve as a reminder of one’s own balance. Perhaps it is meant to embody support or accompany a new beginning.

Other ideas begin simply as a feeling. The colours and shapes have not yet been decided. At first, there is merely an energy that will find its place in the finished work.

This energy becomes the starting point. We discuss what the mandala should embody and the space for which it is being created. I then translate our shared intention into colour, form and my intuitive painting process.

My own fundamental approach remains the same. Joy, love and compassion underpin the work. The personal intention gives it an additional direction.

You can find out more about this collaborative process on my page about Dream piece.

So what is the intended effect?

My answer is clearer today:

I paint joy, love and compassion into it. In the case of a wish mandala, the intention chosen together is added to this.

I’m not going to tell you exactly how this energy will affect you.

Perhaps you feel a sense of calm. Perhaps strength, warmth or confidence. Perhaps the mandala simply draws you in, even before you can explain why.

So, in the end, one question remains:

What effect do you notice?

Feel free to have a look at my originals. Which mandala draws you in, and how does it make you feel?

The post Was soll dieses Mandala bewirken? appeared first on jayjayma.de.

Every mandala begins with a colour. I never decide which one to use based on a fixed formula. I work intuitively, without following any colour wheel formula. Nevertheless, at some point I wanted to know: what is actually behind this gut feeling? What does research actually say about the effects of colours, and what is merely a convenient simplification?

Was Farbpsychologie wirklich zeigt

Blau beruhigt, Rot aktiviert, Gelb macht fröhlich.

Farbe in verschiedenen Kulturen

Was am Ende zählt

Eine Regel gibt es trotzdem. Farben wirken. 🙂

Sometimes you only find things out in hindsight.

The exhibition had long since ended, and the paintings were back in the studio, when someone told me what had been discussed during the early stages of preparing the exhibition: whether mandalas had any place in a church at all, and whether they were Christian.

It had all started quite unspectacularly: I was asked whether I could imagine exhibiting my pictures at the Simon-Petrus Church in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel. The church building no longer has an active congregation — though it has not been deconsecrated; weddings, for example, still take place there. The Friends of the Simon-Petrus Church, a voluntary organisation that grew out of this very congregation, has been keeping the building alive for the past year: with concerts, readings and exhibitions.

I was immediately taken with the idea of being able to exhibit there. The building is utterly unusual, with glass blocks in a variety of colours that allow light to flood into the room in a way that changes constantly throughout the day. When I first stood inside, I thought: how beautifully this complements the mandalas.

But back to the discussion: I had to pause for a moment when I heard about it. Not because the question of whether mandalas are even Christian had offended me, but because it got me thinking. Because it has a depth that deserves a good blog post.

Taking the question seriously

And somehow I really liked the question. I mean that without any irony. Because questions asked out of genuine conviction deserve to be engaged with — not dismissed out of hand.

However, the word ‘Christian’ can have two meanings in this sentence, and it is worth examining this in more detail.

Firstly: that it has Christian origins. The answer here is clear and straightforward — no. The word ‘mandala’ comes from Sanskrit, and the practice stems from Hindu and Buddhist traditions. This has never been in doubt, and it would not be a criticism, but simply a fact.

The second possible meaning: being at odds with the Christian faith. And that is certainly the real issue at stake here. In Tantric Buddhism, the mandala is, in fact, a spiritual tool with a very specific religious function: an object of meditation aimed at a particular experience of the divine. Anyone who removes it from this context, the argument goes, may be taking on more than they intended.

This is a case for being mindful, for thinking carefully about what we surround ourselves with. And I fully agree with this sentiment: things should not be adopted without a second thought.

It’s just that when I look at history — and at what the circle itself represents, long before any religion came into being — the picture looks rather different.

What the word reveals

Let’s start with the word. ‘Mandala’ comes from Sanskrit — the ancient Indian language of scholarship — and simply means ‘circle’. There is no ritual, no deity, no creed inherent in the word itself. Just the oldest geometric shape known to humankind.

Circular images with a distinct centre appear in archaeological finds from the Palaeolithic era — estimated to be between 25,000 and 30,000 years old. Long before Hinduism or Buddhism existed. Long before there were churches. Humans have produced this image time and again, across a wide variety of cultures, independently of one another.

The circle has always been part of the church

The next time you step inside a Gothic cathedral, you should look up — at the rose window above the portal. Notre-Dame in Chartres. Notre-Dame in Paris. Strasbourg Cathedral. Magnificent circular windows, with diameters of over 13 metres, arranged concentrically and centred on a single point. (Wikipedia: Rose window)

Art historians describe their effect as follows: soothing, harmonious, meditative. They can embody the perfection of the divine love that radiates in all directions. This is not an esoteric interpretation. It is stated in every art history book.

These rose windows were created from the 11th century onwards — and they follow exactly the same principle as a mandala: a centre from which order unfolds outwards. Symmetry. Concentration. An invitation to focus one’s gaze and find peace.

The circle as a spiritual form is not something imported from the East to the West. It has been carved in stone and etched in glass in Europe for centuries. It is as much a part of the Church as it is of Buddhism — because, on closer inspection, it does not belong to any one tradition alone.

What researchers say

In his book *Mandala – In Search of Enlightenment* (Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt), the author and photographer Peter van Ham has compared the symbolism of circles across all religions and cultures — from Mexico to Kathmandu, and from Buddhism through Christianity to Islam. An interview on this subject appeared on evangelisch.de, the news portal of the Protestant Church — in other words, on a platform that is anything but indifferent to the issue.

Van Ham says there: “In its original Sanskrit meaning, ‘mandala’ simply means ‘circle’. Drawing a circle was, and still is today, regarded in a spiritual context as a means of centring oneself and focusing one’s concentration. As my research has shown, this can be found in all of humanity’s spiritual traditions.”

And he draws a comparison that moved me: a Christian monstrance containing the Host, a Buddhist Wheel of Dharma, and an archaic Chinese disc symbolising the afterlife — all circular, all with a point-like centre as the seat of all-encompassing truth. All three suggest that there is a transcendence beyond purely physical existence — and thus convey a message that fosters deep understanding between peoples.

Three cultures. Three millennia. The same gesture.

What matters to me

My mandalas do not convey any religious doctrine. No creed, no deity, no teaching. They are created in silence — to the rhythm of the drawing tool, dot by dot, stroke by stroke — out of a desire to create something that brings calm to a space. Both literally and figuratively.

I believe that paintings can have an effect. That a mandala on the wall — through its symmetry, its centre, its colour scheme — speaks to something within a person that words cannot reach. Something that cannot be explained, but can be felt.

I have described in more detail what happens within a person during this process — and what role protection and transformation play in this ancient form — in this article.

How this relates to spirituality is something I have described elsewhere: as breath — not as a technique or a sense of belonging, but as what arises when one truly pauses.

Whether it happens in a living room, an office or a church that is currently finding its way again — the form, the intention and the effect remain the same.

Conclusion: the circle belongs to everyone

The discussion that took place regarding my exhibition ultimately reached a clear conclusion: the pictures were allowed to be displayed. The exhibition went ahead.

Looking back, what moves me most about it is not the outcome. It is the fact that the question was asked — seriously, out of genuine concern for what this place means. That is not backwardness.

Perhaps the deepest common ground between art and faith lies precisely in this: that both are searching for a centre. Not necessarily the same one. Not by the same means. But with the same earnestness.

The circle was already present in cathedrals long before the word ‘mandala’ reached Europe. It appears in sand drawings, in church windows and on canvases. It does not belong to any one tradition alone.

Anyway, this question kept me thinking for a while — longer than the exhibition lasted. I’m curious to hear what you think about it.

The post Mandalas in der Kirche — darf das sein? appeared first on jayjayma.de.

Was die westliche Psychologie erkannte

The post Warum ein Mandala den Raum verändert appeared first on jayjayma.de.

In meinem Atelier herrscht meistens kreatives Chaos.

Aber weißt du was?

There are a lot of moments right now when the world feels like a heavy place.

News of wars, crises, and uncertainty is suddenly no longer a distant concern but has become part of our everyday lives. And even as we go about our business, work, and live our daily lives, many of us feel something lingering beneath the surface: a quiet sense of unease. Sometimes it’s fear. Sometimes it’s a feeling of powerlessness. And sometimes it’s that elusive question of how things are going to turn out.

Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Not always loud. But often noticeable.

It is precisely in times like these that a very clear desire arises: to find inner peace.
Not because everything outside is calm—but because we need a place within ourselves that is.

What helps me isn’t withdrawing from the world, nor is it “gaining more knowledge.” It’s a shift in perspective—one that keeps bringing me back to what I can actually control.

And that’s exactly why I picked this picture:

The Mandala of Control

The concept of the Circle of Control is not new. It dates back to Stoic philosophy, to Epictetus, and is as simple as it is liberating:

There are things you can control.
And then there’s everything else.

What happens in the world, how other people behave, what news reaches us – none of this is within our direct control. And yet we often spend an incredible amount of energy worrying about precisely these things.

I know that feeling all too well. That inner turmoil, that mental clinging to things that can’t be grasped – and yet still won’t let us go.

At some point, I realised: I need a picture for this.

This is how my Mandala of Control came into being. At its centre lies what belongs to me. Towards the outside, it becomes wider and more open – a space for everything I cannot control, but must simply let go of.

Not as a perfect solution. But as a guide I can always come back to.

Finding inner peace does not begin in the outside world

A mandala always has a clear centre. Everything else unfolds from there.

And that’s exactly how it feels.

At the heart of it all lies what you can truly control:
your thoughts, your reactions, how you treat yourself, your breath in this very moment.

The further you move away from it, the quicker that feeling of being driven takes hold. Of inner restlessness. Of powerlessness.

Finding inner peace does therefore not mean shutting out the world.
Instead, it means consciously returning to this centre again and again.

The Mandala of Control – an image that showed me where my centre lies.

Why helplessness feels so real

What we often underestimate is that our bodies do not clearly distinguish between a real threat and what we pick up from the news and our surroundings.

When we are confronted with crises, conflicts and uncertainty on a daily basis, our system reacts precisely to this – with tension, heightened alertness and a sense of needing to take action.

The thing is: there’s often nothing specific we can do. And that’s exactly where this feeling of helplessness comes from. Not all of a sudden, but gradually. Not because we’re weak – but because we spend too long trying to hold on to things that are beyond our control.

For me, the Mandala of Control serves as a gentle reminder at times like these:
Where is my energy right now? And does it really belong there?

Finding inner peace in everyday life – three ways to get back on track

1. Gently shift your focus

It’s not about tuning out the world.
But it does make a difference what you focus on.

Instead of constantly getting caught up in things that are beyond your control, you could ask yourself:
What exactly can I do about it today?

It doesn’t have to be much.
A short walk. A thoughtful conversation. A moment of peace.

It is often right there that something begins which feels like stability once again.

2. Make deliberate use of visual cues

Sometimes what’s needed isn’t a new idea, but a new perspective.

When your eye follows a mandala, a sense of calm is created: the symmetrical shapes, the repetitions, the balance – all of this has a direct effect on your nervous system.

Your breathing becomes deeper.
Your thoughts slow down.

A mandala in a room can thus become a place of tranquillity. Not merely as decoration, but as something that constantly brings you back to yourself.

3. Finding your way back to the moment with your hands

There is a difference between distraction and genuine rest. One offers brief relief. The other truly brings you back to yourself.

For me, that’s exactly what happens when I paint. Dot by dot, a rhythm emerges that makes no demands and passes no judgement. Over time, my mind grows quieter – and at the same time clearer. For me, this immersion is one of the most direct ways to find inner peace.

What really keeps you going

The world isn’t suddenly going to become any simpler or calmer. That’s not something we can control.

What we can influence, however, is the place from which we approach it. For me, it always comes down to this movement back to the centre. Not perfect, not permanent – but conscious.

The Mandala of Control is not a concept, but a reminder: I do have control. Not everywhere, but exactly where it counts.

And sometimes, just taking a quiet moment to look at a pattern is enough to feel that again.

A little guidance for you

If you find yourself in a similar situation:

Make a conscious effort to focus on what you can control

Allow yourself to take on less when it all gets too much

Find an anchor – visual or creative – that brings you back to yourself

If you’d like to bring this very same sense of calm into your own space:
In my studio, I create hand-painted mandalas to accompany you through your daily life and constantly remind you to find your centre. Or you can experience it for yourself through hands-on activities – you can find all workshop dates on my website.

Perhaps that is exactly the first step you need to take.

The post Innere Ruhe finden – mein Weg durch turbulente Zeiten appeared first on jayjayma.de.

Foto: Elena Nowak Fotografie

Foto: Elena Nowak Fotografie

Foto: Elena Nowak Fotografie

Kunst beginnt beim Betrachten

Foto: Elena Nowak Fotografie

Thu, 12/03: 10 – 12 Uhr
Fr, 13/03: 17 – 19 Uhr
Thu, 19/03: 10 – 12 Uhr & 19:00 – 20:30
Fr, 20/03: 17 – 19 Uhr
Tue, 24/03: 19:00 – 20:30 Uhr
Thu: 26/.03: 10 – 12 Uhr
Fr, 27/03: 17 – 19 Uhr
Tue, 31/03: 15 – 17 Uhr
Thu, 02/04: 10 – 12 Uhr

Foto: Elena Nowak Fotografie

Back in summer I put together a small To-Want list for the third quarter — not as a strict plan, but as a gentle reminder of what really matters to me. No “musts”, no “shoulds”, more of an “I’d like to”.

Now that the days are drawing in and my focus has shifted back towards the studio and being seen, I can feel how good this format is for me. It doesn’t push, but it helps me focus. This time I’d like to take a little more space to write about a few of the points in detail — to explore the why behind them: what drives me, what I hope for.

Perhaps some of these thoughts will resonate with you. Perhaps they’ll inspire you to write a small To-Want list of your own for the coming months.

Business

I'm completing Blogtoberfest within the specified time frame.✅
I usually sign up for challenges with great enthusiasm – and then end up putting them off until ‘sometime later’. Not this time. Three live sessions via Zoom with Judith Peters, three inspiring afternoons – and a blog article that grew out of it. Namely this one.

Sichtbar machen, was gewachsen ist.

Ich will schreiben, was gerade im Atelier passiert, was mich bewegt.

Also ran ans Werk!

Ich plane das neue Gartenjahr. ✅
Habe vor kurzem zwei Apps für mich entdeckt: Gardify and Fryd. Zwei neue Welten.

Sport

Jeden Tag dehne ich mich mindestens acht Minuten. ✅
Acht Minuten klingen machbar.

Mindset

I check every major decision by how it feels — and act accordingly. In short: I listen to my gut.✅
My motto from the last to-want list was “With lightness, joy and the courage to be seen.”
That hasn’t changed — and there’s a reason why lightness and joy come first.

A recent story sums it up. A few days ago, I spotted a call for exhibitors at a Christmas art fair. Instantly I thought: this is my sign! Finally out there, showing what I can do — it felt right. I applied, visited the space, made notes, imagined it all. In my head, the exhibition was already happening.

And yes, I was proud of myself — for acting instead of hesitating, for stepping forward without waiting for perfection. That was new. And good.

But the more concrete the plans became, the clearer I felt the cost. The venue wasn’t ideal, many of my works are still on display elsewhere until January, and time was running short. I would have had to rush everything — and joy would have been the first thing to go.

So I declined. Not out of fear, but because my gut was wiser than my head. Visibility should grow naturally, not be forced. I’m allowed to decide when enough is enough — and when the right moment has arrived.

Bonus: everything else on this list now feels manageable again. Light. Easy. Just right.

September was quiet.
The days ticked by with three blog articles, a small commissioned piece, fine-tuning the website and a new 50 cm mandala that is currently growing. At the same time, the weather was glorious – and a few breaths of Baltic Sea air did me good. Looking back on the month, it seems almost unspectacular.

On the blog

I wrote three texts.
They cover everything from understanding the autonomic nervous system to the calming effect of mandalas to what I want to achieve as an artist and course instructor. For me, this series belongs together: first understand, then feel, then figure out why I paint and teach exactly for this reason.

My purpose as an artist and course instructor

See serenity, feel serenity – how mandalas can relieve your autonomic nervous system

Understanding the autonomic nervous system—and regulating it with gentle impulses

In the studio

A new mandala is taking shape.
The diameter: 50 centimetres. The colour palette is in fresh shades of green.
I'll show it when it's finished. I also received a small commission – a real pleasure! I'm currently working on four coasters for drinks. The colours are finely coordinated.

Website and shop

A lot of structure was created. I changed a lot of things. Optimised. Learned.
And finally integrated the VG Wort (Copyright collecting agency) tracking pixels. Made many adjustments that are invisible in the front end (keyword: SEO). The shop was left a little behind, but I did add a few new works.

Social Media

Instagram fell silent.
After August, I deliberately took a break. Because I have to say: sometimes I find it really annoying. I haven't yet found the right approach for me there. I find it too time-consuming (for now), but perhaps that will change with a little more routine. When the new work is finished – and the shop is further stocked – I'll be back there with substance instead of hasty posts.

Outdoors and on the go

The light was golden.
A short trip to the Baltic Sea cleared my head. These moments not only nourish my work in the studio.

The other job

My other freelance job took up a lot of time. Projects and deadlines had to be juggled, and by the evening I had no energy left. But that's okay, because I don't want to put myself under pressure anymore.

Outlook for October

Finalise the shop. A sneak peek of the new mandala. Perhaps a new workshop date? And a newsletter that bundles the three blog articles and includes a short breathing exercise.

And you?

Tell me about your September.
Stagnation, turmoil, or something in between?
I look forward to your comment!

The post Monatsrückblick September 2025: Still.
